The Mexico Academy and Central School District’s Adult Roles and Skills and the New York State Learning Standards serve to clarify the district’s instructional targets for graduation and provide the base for all curriculum and instruction.
Contributing Family Member
Serve as a contributing member of the family who is a role model for other family members. Understand their role as spouse, parent, and child. Be an able caregiver and nurturer. Promote a healthy lifestyle. As a contributing family member, students will teach and demonstrate:
· the ability to manage personal business
· the ability to manage time effectively
· the ability to respect individual differences
· good reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills
· knowledge of human development
· support and participation in the activities of interest to others
· problem-solving skills
· interpersonal skills, relationships, and responsibilities
· effective decision-making skills
· skills that promote and maintain the nutritional, health, and safety needs of the family
Informed Consumer
Act as an informed, responsible consumer who can manage a budget, home, and family. As an informed consumer, students will demonstrate:
· money managing skills
· understanding of basic legal issues of being a consumer and homeowner /renter
· responsible property maintenance
· organizational skills necessary to make responsible consumer decisions
· the ability to organize their lifelong financial needs and develop plans to achieve lifelong goals
Successful Work Force Member
Function as a contributing member of the work force. Possess the leadership, communication, and technical skills that will allow them to be successful employees and employers responsible to and for other people. As a successful work force member, students will demonstrate:
· good listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
· problem-solving skills
· the ability to manage time and budget effectively
· interpersonal and team relationships and responsibilities
· a strong work ethic by initiating and completing tasks to the best of their ability
· support for other members of their work force team
· the ability to gather information needed to make informed decisions
· willingness to accept and give constructive criticism
· knowledge of skills and equipment needed to perform a job
· responsibility for health, appearance, and wellness
· reliability, honesty, and loyalty
· leadership by being responsible to and for other people
Model Citizen
Act as an active and contributing member of the community. Possess the skills needed to analyze community issues, select capable leaders, and support positive initiatives that will preserve and enhance their local, regional, national, and international community. As a model citizen, students will demonstrate:
· a working knowledge of the democratic process and their personal role within that process
· understanding of the concept and process of taxation
· understanding of environmental issues and their personal responsibility to the environment
· effective communication and interaction skills
· awareness of and adherence to established laws
· pride in and stewardship for their community
· compassion by being responsible to and for other people in the community
· understanding of their role and the role of government in the local, regional, national, and international community
Lifelong Learner
Engage in lifelong learning, recognizing the need to continually expand knowledge and skills. As a lifelong learner, students will demonstrate:
· understanding of the basic skills needed for learning, showing ability to use them appropriately
· critical thinking skills including comprehension, evaluation, application, and problem-solving
· self-management and motivation, showing ability to organize and manage their time and resources, set appropriate goals, and stay on task
· the ability to determine when more knowledge and/or skills are necessary to meet their goals
· the ability to locate, retrieve, and utilize information in many forms including technology
Effective Communicator
Communicate effectively in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Use conflict resolution and interpersonal skills in all forms of communication. As an effective communicator, students will demonstrate:
· the ability to comprehend information effectively through reading and listening including both verbal and non-verbal components
· the ability to organize, prepare, and deliver information, thoughts and opinions in both speech and writing
· the ability to process and manage information using technology
· the ability to communicate in more than one language
· the ability to reach collaborative resolution with others through appropriate use of shared decision-making, compromise, consensus-building, and mediation
· the ability to actively engage in creation and performance in the arts (dance, music, theater, and visual arts) and participate in various roles in the arts
