Forecast optimistic for outdoor commencement ceremony

The Talkative - (June 18, 2012) - Mexico High School principal Don Root began looking at the long range weather forecast last week hoping that clear skies would allow the June 22nd commencement ceremony to take place outside.

"As soon as the ten-day forecast was available, I was checking," Root said.

That first forecast had a 30% chance of some rain.

Root said that the latest forecast for clear skies and temperatures in the upper 70's should be ideal for the 7:00 p.m. ceremony held on the school's football stadium.

"I was ecstatic to see that the heat wave predicted is expected to break by Friday," Root said.

The official decision will be made  early on Friday. Students or their families may check the district's website if there are any changes to the venue, Root said.

Despite the optimistic forecast, the district's custodial staff will have the Proud Gymnasium set up for an indoor commencement ceremony, Root said.

If the ceremony is moved indoors, each graduate will be allotted four tickets, which may be picked up following rehearsal.

Root said last year's decision to go ahead with the ceremony outside was difficult because there was a threat of strong storms in the area. While there were a few sprinkles and ominous clouds above, the ceremony was not impeded by weather.

"Last year the kids really wanted the ceremony outside," Root said.

"It's tradition. The kids, parents want it outside. It's important to the Mexico community to have the tradition continue," he said.

Root added that the ceremony will also be webcast and available in the Avery Skinner Auditorium rain or shine.

Commencement has been held on Friday evening now for the last decade after traditionally being held on Saturday morning.
