Powderpuff game highlights Homecoming Weekend
(September 20, 2012) - More than 100 girls will take the football field later this month for the annual Powder Puff game featuring the juniors and seniors respectively. Powder Puff has been a part of Mexico High School’s tradition for many years. Former teacher and later assistant principal, Mrs. Christine Plath brought the game together in the early 1980’s and continued into the 1990’s. During that time the game was just thrown together for entertainment purposes for the girls and for the community. It was brought back in 2002 as a fundraiser for the Junior and Senior classes. The game profits are split evenly. Funds can range from $1000 to $200 going into each class. When it was brought back, the game consisted of entertaining and comical “plays” or runs in order to please the crowd and the teams. However, the game has reached a whole new level of intensity. Both classes start practicing before school started once a week and have “training sessions” and practices after school until game day which will also be part of Homecoming Weekend. Last year’s game ended in a tie, and was so competitive that several girls left with minor injuries, including a broken tooth, broken finger and several stitches. Senior coach and former JV Football coach, Mr. Joe Deckman, was asked at the end of last year to coach the Class of ‘13. He was excited to do it, he said. “I really want to see the girls work together and everybody work as a team to win the game.” The senior class has 40 to 45 girls signed up and most of them show up to practice. Deckman is expecting many more players as the game date draws closer. Physical Education teacher, Mr. Andy Chamberlain, will coach the juniors. “It’s a nice change of pace to coach girls rather than boys. I am hoping we have fun and also hoping that we can win.” The Junior class have more than 50 girls signed up to play. Each team will also have dozens of young men serve as cheerleaders.
